Priming & Prep Work

Wood:When painting timber that has never been painted before, a light sand is required to create a key in the surface and also to even the surface.  Ensure you remove any flaking paint of wood chips with sanding prior to priming.  If you are painting a previously painted item and the surface is sound i.e. no bubbles, chipping or wax then a light sanding is sufficient before painting.  Should the wooden surface you are painting be waxed then you would need to sand the piece completely prior to priming.

Walls: When preparing walls prior to painting a light sand is recommended once all holes and imperfections are filled and dried.  It is not necessary to sand your walls if you are not filling in any holes.

Exterior walls:There are many reasons paint may flake on exterior walls, often on the most weather beaten side of the house or walls. There are many reasons for flaking to occur some of which are the presence of mould or mildew, a build-up of salts known as efflorescence, or moisture trapped in the surface beneath.  If you are looking to repaint an exterior wall surface that has flaking paint you must remove any loose flakes.  We recommend using a wire brush, scraper or power washer to remove these flakes.  Once the surface is sound it should be treated accordingly, biological growths must be removed using our Fungicidal Wash as per instructions.  A coat of our Stabilising Solution, a clear primer with a thin watery appearance, is ideal for stabilising powdery or chalky surfaces or on masonry or absorbent surfaces. Once treated, paint the area with two coats of our Weather Exterior Masonry finish in your desired colour.

Interior walls and ceilings:Peeling, bubbling and cracking occur on interior walls when there is a lack of adhesion between the paint and the surface.  There are a number of factors that can cause this but when we look to interior walls and ceilings, moisture and excessive condensation are the number one causes.  More often than not if there is flaking on interior walls or ceilings it is more than likely in the kitchen or bathroom.  In high moisture areas such as kitchens and bathrooms it is crucial to ensure you have adequate ventilation, without it flaking or bubbling may be a recurring problem in this area. When water penetrates through the coats of paint, it causes the layers to separate and detach from the surface. This results in bulging, cracking, and finally, peeling.   If you are looking to repaint an interior wall that has flaking paint you must remove any loose flakes.  We recommend using a scraper or sandpaper to remove these flakes.  Once the surface is sound it should be treated accordingly, any imperfection should be filled and the wall should be primed with PRIME4 where needed.  Once treated, two coats of Interior Matt, Ceramic Matt, or Soft Sheen in your desired colour should be applied to the wall.  For areas with poor ventilation consider using Soft Sheen finish.

Interior/Exterior wood: If you are looking to repaint timber that has flaking paint you must remove any loose flakes.  We recommend using a scraper or sandpaper to remove these flakes.  Once the surface is sound it should be treated accordingly, any imperfection should be filled and lightly sanded.  The surface must be primed prior to painting, take a look at our Prime guide here (link to prime guide image) to ensure you are using the best primer for the type of substrate.  Follow with two coats of either Eggshell, Satin, Gloss, or Woodcoat (exterior only) in your desired colour.

Priming is essential when painting any bare, unpainted surface and may also be recommended to create a sound surface for paint to adhere to.  We recommend using one coat of an appropriate Colourtrend primer followed by two-three coats of your chosen topcoat for the perfect finish. This may vary depending on the substrate.

Clean equipment with water immediately after use. Replace lid on can and stir thoroughly before re-use.

Unfortunately, we do not recommend using our paint for flooring, as our paints do not contain anti-slip properties.

With the right preparation and primer, it is possible to paint your wall tiles, not floor tiles. We recommend cleaning your tiles thoroughly beforehand, especially in the kitchen. We would advise using an excellent degreaser or sugar soap. Then apply Prime 1 to your tiles and follow with a trim finish of your choice.

Yes any of our trim finishes are suitable for painting radiators; this includes eggshell, satin or gloss.
